Busting the Myths: Why Cruising is for Everyone

Cruising has come a long way from the outdated notion that it is only for the "newlywed and nearly dead." With innovations that cater to travelers of all ages and interests, today’s cruise ships are dynamic floating resorts offering something for everyone.

Yet, despite their growing popularity, myths about cruising still hold many travelers back. Let’s set the record straight on some of the most persistent misconceptions about cruising.

Myth 1: I’ll Feel Claustrophobic

Hate feeling confined? Modern cruise ships offer open-air lounges, spacious staterooms (my must-have: a private balcony), and panoramic views that rival the most luxurious hotels.

I can help you pick an itinerary with minimal sea days so that you spend as much time as possible exploring new destinations than you will on-board.

Myth 2: I'll get seasick

Modern ships are equipped with advanced stabilizers that minimize motion. If you’re still concerned, remedies like acupressure bands or ginger tea work wonders.

Opt for itineraries in calmer waters, like the Mediterranean or Caribbean, for an even smoother ride.

Although not the focus of this article I must give a plug here for river cruising if you are absolutely set against the possibility of motion sickness. River cruising eliminates the bounce of ocean waves.

Myth 3: I'll gain weight

Cruise ships offer indulgent dining, but they also provide healthier options like fresh salads, made-to-order meals, and lighter fare.

Take advantage of onboard fitness centers, active excursions, and the opportunity to walk miles each day. Whether on an excursion or onboard, and you’ll find it easy to stay balanced.

Myth 4: There’s Nothing to Do Onboard

Far from boring, cruises rival the entertainment offerings of major cities. Think rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, Broadway-style shows, cooking classes, wine, cheese, or chocolate tastings, rooftop movie screenings, libraries, classy and relaxing piano bars, art galleries and auctions, tattoo salons, spas, gyms, ball courts, walking/running tracks, classes and lectures...I could go on, as this is only a smattering of the activities.

You need to go and see for yourself. Whether you want non-stop action or laid-back luxury, there’s a perfect pace for every traveler.

Myth 5: I'll be too busy

Ah, yes, the opposite complaint of Myth 4. The beauty of cruising is its flexibility.

Participate in as much—or as little—as you’d like. Relax on your balcony, indulge in spa treatments, or find a quiet corner in a library or observation lounge.

Cruises are designed to accommodate both the go-getters and the laid-back loungers.

Myth 6: Cruises Are Too Crowded

The thought of being crammed with thousands of others is enough to deter many, but today’s ships are designed with space and flow in mind.

Larger ships balance their increased capacity with expansive deck areas, multiple dining venues, and countless entertainment options.

If you prefer something more intimate, then smaller vessels like riverboats, yachts, and sailing ships offer exclusive experiences with fewer than 200 passengers. Is that more your style?

Myth 7: Cruises Are for Old Fogies

While retirees may enjoy the flexibility for longer voyages, today’s cruises are designed to welcome travelers of all ages and lifestyles.

Cruise lines now cater to millennials, Gen X, and even Gen Z, with exciting features like celebrity-chef restaurants, rooftop bars, immersive entertainment, and active shore excursions.

Whether you’re flyboarding in the Caribbean or trekking glaciers in Alaska, cruising is as vibrant as you are.

Myth 8: Dressing Up Is Required

Gone are the days of mandatory tuxedos and ballgowns. While some ships host elegant evenings, many offer casual dining options or relaxed dress codes.

Whether you want to pack formalwear or keep it simple, the choice is yours - it's a matte of selecting the right cruise line and itinerary.

Myth 9: I Have to Dine at Set Times, and with Strangers

The answer to this: flexible dining options! Enjoy specialty restaurants, casual venues, or anytime dining in the main restaurant.

If you prefer to dine privately, room service on your balcony is an option.

Myth 10: Cruises Are Expensive

Let’s face it – travel isn’t cheap. The truth is that a cruise is a sea-going version of an all-inclusive vacation, and offers incredible value often bundling accommodations, dining, entertainment, and activities into a single fare.

Compare that to a land-based vacation, and you'll see why some people find it cheaper to cruise than stay home.

From intimate suites with private perks to affordable cabins, there’s an option for nearly every budget.

Myth 11: It’s Impossible to Escape Kids

Traveling without kids? You best choice is an itinerary during school months or a cruise line known for their adult-only spaces.

There are ships (and even cruise lines!) are completely adults-only, ensuring a serene experience.

However, if you are traveling with children and hope to have some quality ‘me’ or ‘us’ time, you will appreciate the stellar programming that keeps younger passengers entertained while you unwind.

Myth 12: Cruise Ships Aren’t Safe

Stories of rogue waves or mechanical failures might grab headlines and spawn entertaining movies, but cruising is one of the safest ways to travel.

Ships undergo regular inspections, and onboard crews are rigorously trained in safety protocols. With features like advanced fire systems, medical facilities, and backup navigation, you can rest easy while sailing the high seas.

Myth 13: Cruises Are Booze-Fueled Parties

While some sailings attract a lively crowd, the atmosphere varies widely by cruise line, itinerary, and season. This is where an experienced travel advisor is invaluable.

Families, couples, solo travelers, and adventure seekers can all find their place on the high seas. If tranquility is your goal, look for adult-focused voyages or longer itineraries that appeal to a more relaxed crowd.

Myth 14: Cruises Aren’t for Solo Travelers

Cruising solo has never been easier, with select ships offering dedicated solo cabins and lounges.

Group activities, shared dining tables, and solo meetups create opportunities to mingle while still enjoying your independence.

Myth 15: Cruises Lack Cultural Immersion

Cruising can be an excellent gateway to authentic experiences. Many shore excursions allow you to explore local markets with chefs, dine with local families, or participate in community-focused projects.

If time in port matters to you, I'll help you select an itinerary with extended or overnight stays that offer the opportunity to savor the local culture.

Myth 16: All cruises are the same.

Heavens no! Choose by style: luxury cruise, expedition cruise, family, small-ship, group charter], work-from-sea (that's brand new - ask me); by destination: Mediterranean, Caribbean, Polar, Pacific, South Pacific Indian Ocean...you get the idea.

The Reality of Cruising

Modern cruising is anything but one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, cultural immersion, or simply a new way to explore the world, there’s a voyage tailored just for you.
