Are these travel tips on your list?

As the summer season fades (though I personally hold on to the essence of summer until outerwear becomes unavoidable), many of you may find that your travels stall until the holidays arrive and call for you to visit your faraway family.

It brings me a touch of melancholy because I know the extraordinary experiences you are missing while you take that pause in your journeys. Nonetheless, despite the seasonal shift, the following travel insights remain invaluable for any discerning traveler, whether you’re a frequent globetrotter, or are already planning your next grand escape.

After carefully curating the wealth of travel advice available, I’ve distilled it into twelve essential tips. Naturally, there are many more, but we’ll save those for a future conversation.

Here are your travel tips…

  1. Photograph your passport and email it to yourself. In the unfortunate event that your phone is lost, you’ll still be able to access this vital document from a public computer.

  2. I highly recommend obtaining TSA Pre-check or Global Entry for effortless passage through airport security. These programs are well worth the investment, and many premium credit cards will reimburse the fee. As an added layer of convenience, the Customs and Border Patrol’s Mobile Passport app is an excellent way to avoid queues upon your return.

  3. Familiarize yourself with tipping customs and carry local currency. In many countries, tipping is not only unnecessary but can also be considered impolite. A little research ensures you navigate these cultural nuances with ease.

  4. Inform your credit card companies of your travel plans. Nothing is more inconvenient than a hold being placed on your card while abroad. A quick notification to your bank can save you from this potential interruption.

  5. Purchase travel insurance. For any international journey, it is a must. The peace-of-mind it affords is well worth the investment, protecting you from unforeseen circumstances, and more importantly protecting your health and well-being. All of my clients have received my travel insurance lecture at some point. You can search the blog for my articles on the topic.

  6. Carry a travel essentials kit. This should include items such as a toothbrush, medications, facial wipes, earplugs, eye mask, band-aids, safety pins, and any other personal must-haves. If checking your luggage, always ensure you have a few changes of clothes in your carry-on to avoid being caught off-guard should your baggage be delayed.

  7. Pack a collapsible tote bag. Many travelers find themselves returning home with more than they departed with; I know I do. An elegant and compact tote bag, tucked into your luggage, can offer a refined solution when additional space is required.

  8. Never bring untested shoes. While a beautiful new pair may be tempting, nothing will diminish your experience faster than discomfort. Ensure your footwear has been properly worn to avoid any unpleasant (blistering!) surprises.

  9. Clearly mark your luggage. A sophisticated tag or ribbon not only ensures that your bag stands out at baggage claim but also adds a touch of unique personalization.

  10. Learn a few phrases in the local language. It is a gracious way to connect with the culture you are visiting. Consider utilizing an app such as Duolingo to familiarize yourself with key expressions.

  11. Embrace patience. Travel is transformative, but it can present challenges, such as delays due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. Stay informed, indulge in a fine book, and allow the journey to unfold with grace.

  12. Prepare for your return. After an extended journey, you may not wish to cook immediately upon your return. I recommend arranging for simple, yet high-quality, provisions to be available upon your arrival. A thoughtful travel advisor (such as myself) might also provide a gesture of welcome home, such as a gourmet delivery service gift card to ease you back into daily life.

While there is an abundance of travel advice available, these curated suggestions are designed to enhance your next adventure. I look forward to sharing more in the future.

Until then, feel free to give me a reason to remind you of them, by starting the planning for your next adventure. The green button is your gateway!
